In general you want you fleet to follow a design like this:Įarly game, mostly balanced corvettes with energy/kinetics. Do not ignore using strike craft, they are extremely strong! They also innately have high accuracy, making them effective against any ship sizes or defence composition. Strike craft themselves are extremely strong versus hull and armor, and ignores 100% shields as well. Both types still work against either form of attack, they just perform better against their intended target. Point defense cannons counters missiles, and flak counters strike craft (although I read recently that this may currently be bugged). The final point is strike craft and picket weapons. If you don't know what you're up against, or your enemy uses balanced defenses, just use an even spread of both kinetics and energy weapons. You can more or less freely swap to those when they become available, they are just more specialised versions of their archetypes (larger bonuses and penalties). Initially you will only have lasers and mass drivers, but later you will get plasma and autocannons. In general energy counters armor, and kinetic counters shields. In terms of which weapons to choose, you should ideally know your enemy's defense type (armor vs shields). Big ships also have a major range advantage, letting you do an 'alpha strike' where you knock out large parts of an enemy fleet/starbase before the smaller ships or strike crafts can even engage, not to mention the support auras of titans and juggernauts. Medium ships (cruisers) counter smaller ships, as they mainly have medium and small weapon slots, but usually have significantly more gun slots available with more hull strength.īig ships counter big ships, medium ships, and starbases. This means that small ships (corvettes, destroyers) counter large ships (battleship, titan). Evasion is directly subtracted from accuracy when calculating hit chance, and corvettes can pretty quickly hit the 90% evasion cap with afterburners and decent engines. While bigger weapon slots on ships have higher damage and longer range, they normally also have lower accuracy.

This is a very long post, check below for the general ship design progression if you do not care about the full details. People have already given a few answers, so I just want to explain the ship design mechanics to help you out in general.
